How to wear tutu: rules or myths? Tulle skirts: part 3.

In the previous post tutus - part II we have talked about the history  and secret attraction of tutu skirts. They look gorgeous not only on ballerinas and little girls, high-end fashion designers show them every season.

But there is a danger hidden in tutu as well: one step from beauty and grace to awkward and silly look.

By the way  the word "tutu" came from France. It is a modified slang for "cucul" - so were called buttocks of the dancers streaking on the stage. This is one of the theories of etymology of this word, for more see Wikipedia.

How to wear tutu and look amazing?

Here I gathered really beautiful tutus from world-known masters.

There are five simple rules (or myths?) about tulle skirts.

1. What length to prefer?.. They say that mid-length, just below the knee is  always winning. Skirt looks  very airy, makes your waist thinner and hides hips and heavy bottom.
Well, this is true, but long tutu is fantastic on pretty big ladies, if there are not too many layers and tulle is not stiff. It looks romantic and dreamy, and hides everything you'd like to hide. Everybody knows that tulle skirts consists of layers that flow and ridge, but nobody knows how many layers exactly are in your skirt. This is optic illusion that tricks us: human eye sees full skirt, not full bottom and legs.

2. Be careful with volume! It is said that skinnies can allow as many layers of tulle as they wish, but girls14+ size should consider their proportions and height. For some figures skirt is better to flow than to ridge. You don't  want to look like a tea cosy,  do you?
But slim girl in too many layers of  tulle loses stylish look as well. Proportions is the key to look vintagy, like ballerina or paper figurine... or tea cosy.

Russian traditional tea cosy looks like a lady in a very full padded skirt. Too many layers of stiff tulle - and you can win the same silhouette.
Main thing that is wrong here is: skirt is not proportional, it goes separately from you, and you look like a "hanger" for it.

3. Transparency. Tulle is see-through and it is always sexy. Play with transparency, it is not that important if there are jeans or leggings under the skirt,  or  just your body. Short skirt for modesty underneath is a good thing, especially if you have business-like top and booties.

Though different looks are possible and have a right to exist, it's better remember that normally we don't wear skirt and trousers at the same time. You might be thought that you have put on everything you had in your closet... that you are very cold... or that you have put on jeans, forgot about it and added skirt.

4. Shoes and top. It is said that nearly everything can compliment tulle skirt. There are a lot of photos over the internet of ridiculous looks with tutus. Honestly, not all of them worth publicity.

It is a matter of style. This is my favourite photo. It is bald, daring and beautiful. Skirt doesn't have usual waistband, it is fixed to jeans shorts along the pocket line. Colour, length and volume - everything is perfectly stylish!

As for me, I won't put on tulle skirt with sneakers. My style is different. If I had similar make up and haircut, and that bold expression in the eyes, - I could try.

You don't have to copy catwalk looks, you have to find your own style that grows from within.

5. What are you going to do in your tutu? Keep elegant posture, like ballerinas? Dance in the castle?.. Look for your prince?..

In really beautiful tulle gown you can do anything you please... Really anything.

In this article I gathered the most gorgeous and stylish tulle skirts I could find. But this skirt by Valentino is extremely outstanding. Lovely and sophisticated embroidery, blurs of bright colours on dark blue, golden suns and hearts... Beautiful masterpiece, though I think nobody will really go fishing in it. Because... About washing and ironing of the tulle skirts we'll talk in future posts.
